Apple Genuine Used parts Calibration

What is it?

Using Pulled / Used parts from one device on another is nothing new and is common practise if you wish to keep your device as original but save some money in the process.

However, this did offer some limitations:

- Not all parts could be swapped (FaceID related components)

- Although parts are genuine, your device was unable to determine this and treats it as non-genuine and shows a reminder in Settings that the part has been replaced and that Apple cannot guarantee the quality of the part.

- Battery Health was typicially lost when replacing the battery

So, Whats new?

iOS 18 has introduced the ability to use Pulled / Used parts and be able to calibrate the part to work seamlessly with your device.

Benefits

- Any part of the device can be swapped and calibrated (Including FaceID related components on some models)

- Your device can determine the part is genuine and therefore will not alert you that the part may not be as good as original

- Battery Health reading ability is maintained

Limitations

- Pulled / Used parts that have been removed from a device that has been marked as Lost will be prevented from successfully completing calibration

- This is to discourage device theft for the sole purpose of parts harvesting

As iOS 18 is still in its infancy, the repair industry is still experimenting with scenarios around used parts calibration and we will update this as new information is announced

Can I still have non-genuine parts fitted?

Absolutely, nothing has changed in regards to using non-genuine parts.

These will still be subject to limitations:

- Reminder in Settings that Apple cannot guarantee the quality of the part installed

- Battery Health is typically lost when replacing the battery

I had a pulled part fitted and now that I've updated to IOS 18 it cannot calibrate

Part marked as Lost / Parts locked to owner?

There is no way to 100% determine where your part was originally sourced, despite our and our suppliers upmost diligence when sourcing Pulled / Used parts

However, with the introduction of Pulled / Used part calibration in iOS 18, it will help to mitigate the potential for a Lost part to enter the repair network.

Generic Failed Calibration

At present, it has been determined that pulled screens will only calibrate if the sensors that come attached to that screen are also present.

As this was unknown to be a requirement in the repair industry and those sensors would previously not work on your device, all pulled screens supplied have not come with the sensors attached.

What does this mean for my device?

Your device will still operate completely fine and you will not lose any functionality, you will simply be notified in Settings.

It is worth mentioning that a Pulled / Used part from a device marked as Lost does not automatically mean the device is stolen. Further clarification on this is yet to be determined.

Does this affect my existing Repair Warranty?

Absolutely not. Your Warranty with AsTech Repairs will not change as a result of an unsuccessful Calibration.

If your part fails a calibration after upgrading to iOS 18, a Warranty claim will not be granted for this reason as the part is not faulty and you do not lose any functionality

AsTech Repairs give 12 Months warranty on all repairs, regardless of what part was used.

If your repair was completed within our Warranty period, then this is still in effect and will expire on the original date
